RESUMO

This work aims at analyzing the documents relative to the meeting held by the catraeiros between late 1903 and early 1904 in the Fortaleza harbor, when these workers did not accept to be included in the castings of and the enlistment process into the Brazilian Navy and started a strike. We used E. P. Thompsons experience concept in order to try to understand how the strike was organized, to look over the daily work in the Fortaleza harbor and the troubles caused to the loading and unloading of ships. We analyzed the relationship between these workers, their employers, and the political groups that opposed Antonio Pinto Nogueira Acciolys oligarchy. Thus, this work is divided in two parts: at first, we present the moments that preceded the catraieiros meeting, its scenery, and the characters who were part of its plot; secondly, we analyze both the political transformations that occurred during and after the meeting and its political consequences, with the focus on the confrontation between the acciolina oligarchy and its opponents.
