RESUMO

Cryptococcosis represents an important opportunistic mycosis with frequent and serious occurance in patients hospitalized at the Hospital and Clinics of UNICAMP, specially in immunocompromised patients. The present study was proposed to perfect the knowledge of C. neoformans isolated from patients with cryptococcosis and its correlation with the environment. Fifty-two clinical isolates and 55 environmental (pigeon droppings) isolates of C. neoformans were investigated, from Campinas, which is located in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. The clinical and environmental isolates were identified to species level based on micromorphological and biochemical characteristics and confirmed to be C. neoformans var. neoformans based on the reaction of canavanine-glycine-bromthymol blue agar. Serotyping was performed by slide agglutination test (Crypto Check; latron Co., Japan). Electrophoretic karyotype (EK) analysis was performed by Counter-Clamped Homogeneous Electric Field (CHEF DR-III). All the isolates were tested by broth microdilution method, performed according to the NCCLS guidelines for amphotericin B (AMB), fluconazole (FLCZ), itraconazole (ITCZ), and fluorocytosine (5-FC)...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
