RESUMO

The objective of this research was to investigate trajectories, labor experiences and migration practices among rural wage laborers in a city located in the Alto Paranaíba region in the state of Minas Gerais. This subject is justified by the need to improve knowledge about temporary workers place in modern agriculture and their social practices. Ethnography and interviews were the main research methods. Workers and their social networks were observed in two different places: in the neighborhood where most agricultural workers who moved into the city live; and in a shelter built by the rural workers Trade Union to house people from other places that go to that city looking for jobs in agriculture (coffee harvesting, mostly). There are important differences between these two groups regarding family relations, labor possibilities and mobility practices, even if in both cases agricultural jobs never generate enough income to cover all their needs. In both cases, also, they are hired by intermediaries known as gatos.
