RESUMO

The beauty standard currently accepted increases body distortion and dissatisfaction, which can lead to the development of unhealthy weight control behaviors. The present study investigated the body image perception and its relations with physical activity and exercises in adolescents. It was evaluated 375 adolescents with average age of 16.2 years (± 1.02). Two hundred seventy five students were regularly enrolled in 5 public and 5 private schools (139 boys and 136 girls) and 100 teenagers regularly enrolled in fitness centers (52 boys and 48 girls). It was applied the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ); the Commitment Exercise Scale (CES); the Body Image Questionnaire (BSQ) and the Contour Drowning Scale (CDS), and it was measured weight and height to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI). The results were analyzed by an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by post-hoc test of Newman-Keuls (p <0,05), as well as the Pearsons correlation analysis. The results showed a prevalence of normality in relation to nutritional status in both sexes, with the vast majority of participants engaging in any physical activity regularly. The boys have a higher degree of psychological commitment to the habit of exercise, and this impairment increases as the result of increases in the level of activity practiced. Regarding to body image, it was observed that it is directly related to the nutritional status, with overweight individuals having more distortion and dissatisfaction than malnourished and normal weight individuals, indicating that both distortion and dissatisfaction increases as BMI increases. Meanwhile, it was found no connection between the perception of body image and physical activity. However, it was found that girls who practice some form of physical exercise have more distortion and more dissatisfaction than girls who do not practice, which does not occur in males. Thus, it appears that the perception of body image is dependent on the nutritional status in both sexes, what does not occur with the practice of physical activity and exercise.
