RESUMO

The existence of activities prison in Ilha Grande, located in the southern state of Rio de Janeiro (municipality Angra dos Reis) is very old. The Cândido Mendes Penitentiary, located in Vila de Dois Rios, as in activity, became famous in Ilha Grande, which was known as "Jail Island". The Cândido Mendes prison was the great organizer of the space and, consequently, of a good part of the economic relations in Ilha Grande. The construction of highway BR 101 (Rio-Santos) in the 1960s, the creation of the Parque Estadual da Ilha Grande in 1971 and the closing of the Intituto Penal Cândido Mendes prison in 1994 marked the end of the activity in the Ilha Grande prison and the beginning of tourist activity and the priority use for environmental protection. The change of use from correctional purpose for environmental protection and tourism, implemented by the State, has reorganized the community space and the emergence of territorial disputes related to environmental issues, being the object of analysis and reflection in this study.
