RESUMO

The main objective of this dissertation is understanding the importance of the Music Technical Course at Representative Manoel Novaes State School for the professional life of students who finish their courses. It does research on the meaning of this formation for the construction and/or enhancement of musical knowledge and also knowledge related to the world of work, as well as its value for the entry and permanence in the work market. The methodology used is qualitative investigation, with social and historic approach. Semistructured interviews were carried out with three Music teachers that were involved in the Course, and four former students, who also answered a social and economic questionnaire. Official and non-official documents, in printed form or in the WEB, were also used as a source of data. By having a social and historic approach, it was necessary to reconstruct the history of the course, thus presenting its relationship to the educational context of the country. Taking this context into consideration, as well as the courses specificities and the personal social and historic situation of each former student who collaborated, their voices were heard and analyzed based on the theoretical ground chosen. The results reveal the relevance of school musical formation for the appropriation of cultural assets as symbolic assets, as well as the need of musical education that aims the emancipation of working musicians, given the precarious work conditions found in this situation.
