The physiotherapy uses several resources aiming to normalize the estomatognatic system function and to provide an improvement in the quality of life of these individuals The general objective of the present study was to measure the influence of the physiotherapy in the improvement of the symptoms and the quality of life al self reported by patients carrying TMJD. The study was conducted on 60 patientes of both sexes, with ages varying between 18 and 70 with diagnosis of TMJD, in the clinic of the Faculdade de Odontologia de Ribeirão Preto (FORP-USP), being those divided in two groups with 30 patients each. One group received physiotherapeutic and odontologic treatment, and the other received only the odontologic treatment. The measure of the quality of life was assessed by Medical generic questionnaire SF-36 Outcome Study-Millstone Shorts From Health Survey, in two occasions, at the beginning of the treatment and an other in the end. The results show that the patients who had made an interdisciplinary treatment evidenced positive results in all domain of the questionnaire: functional capacity, limitation for physical aspects, pain, general state of health, social vitality, aspects, emotional aspects and mental health. In the group that only received odontologic treatment, a positive result was observed only in the domain related to pain. The SF-36 questionnaire was a suitable instrument, relatively quick and easy to use to measure the quality of life in patients with temporomandibular disorder. Thus, the results indicate the importance of a multidisciplinary work and the contributions that phisioterapy may offer to lead to a better quality of life for patients with TMJD
