RESUMO

This work analyzes the influences of the social capital and the organizational structure in the activities of creation and sharing of the knowledge. This study was carried out at ServiÃo Federal de Processamento de Dados (SERPRO) â the largest public Brazilian company in the area of information and communication technology of the Country â specifically focusing SERPRO-Recife. The qualitative approach was used to better understand the way social structures work in the company, with information got from document analysis, observations and non-structured interviews. For this research, we used the case study strategy through an detailed examination of this branch in Recife. The results revealed a necessity of greater interactivity, flexibility and plainness in this branch to minimize the effects of the identified mechanical structure, and this is the striking feature of structural category of social capital. The cognitive social capital dimensions found at the company showed to be little developed and they donât correspond satisfactorily to the fragmentary structural design, resistant to the organizational integration even with the presence of a good technology infra-structure. The research found managers involvement to be important in the essential process of knowledge, mainly, to mediate and coordinate the organizational activities which contribute to social capital generation. In those divisions where the employees have more interaction, it was possible to find out more organic structure models overlapping the most formal design of the firm. From what was found, social capital, organizational structure influence knowledge management in this branch studied. Managing knowledge seems to be a hard activity to be executed, chiefly due to organization complexity and social capital deficits which many companies display, including the one studied.
