RESUMO

The fundamental question of this research is: how does the Movimento Negro Unificado (MNU) interpret History? Thus, in our study we try to understand in which ways the MNU re-uses historical elements, making of these elements marks of ethnic specificieties and of a group?s racial identity. To ?build? this identity, the MNU had selected some historical facts, versions, heroes, personalities and refused others, in order to promote a collective representation of the Black. The MNU ? an organization fouded in 1978 to fight against racism in Brazil and that is active until today ? establishes a close relation between historical knowledge and anti-racist militancy. This organization produces a historical knowledge with a strong political motivation because they believe in a straight relationship between ethnic-racial consciusness and the history of resistence of their forefathers. The MNU aims to make the militants conscious by ?historicizing? the past, using the History as a political strategy to fight against racism
