RESUMO

The high productivity of estuary areas of Brazilian coast became them useful by fisheries communities, whose survival is, in general, totally dependent upon those ecosystems. Nevertheless, the urban expansion, high pollutants concentrations and inadequate natural resources management by the neighborâs population is diminishing the biomass, variety and development of species with ecologic and commercial value. In this context, the fishery communities of Barra de Catuama, Tejucupapo and Atapuz, placed at Itapessoca river estuary, Pernambuco, Brazil. Thus, the goals of this paper was delineate the scope of those communities, from the knowledge of fishermen and fisherwomen belong about appropriate localities for fishing, techniques and equipments used by them, the more captured species with commercial value, besides the perception of caused impacts to the environment and, reflection on quality and diversity of fishes, crustacean and mollusks. From the recognizing of propitious areas for fishing, with GPS afford, data were plotted for a thematic map elaboration. In interviews guided by semi structured questionnaires, there were evaluated the communities that more know and use the fishing areas for specific activities. Data about the more captured species with commercial value and their respective quantification, as well as the communitiesâ knowledge about the impacting factors, and consequent diversity and biomass of fishing products lost, were surveyed. It was evidenced that Barra de Catuama women better know and use the fishing areas, while the same occurs for Tejucupapo`s men. The instruments are handcrafted, while the techniques traditionalist. In all communities for fishermen the species with highest commercial importance are the fishes, alternating the importance order of catching; for women the crustacean and mollusks are the most collected species, being the mollusks the only collected species in Tejucupapo community. The fisher professionals consider important to live near to work areas, due to the facility for displacement, food availability and, fishing transport. From interviewed communities, the Barra de Catuama`s women use mangrove wood for benefiting of their products, while the Tejucupapo`s men are the most users for treatment of their equipments. The existent environmental injuries are considered from two origins: the antropic and the natural ones. The Barra de Catuama community, mainly the women, demonstrate the best perception of the situation, identifying five degrading factors and productivity loss, while the men have been recognized only three. In a general way, the scope of communities is the same, being Barra de Catuama and Atapuz more similar. Tejucupapo is the most productive, being the Atapuz women more efficient due to be family chiefs, while the men fishes much more in Tejucupapo and Atapuz. Finally, those information can subside future studies in that area, besides the elaboration of a management and environmental conservation plan
