This research aims at studying the social meaning of Occupational Therapy and the role of occupational therapists. The theory of social representations serves as a guideline for this study, as we understand that the cummunication between occupational therapists and their patients is filled with conceptions from occupational therapy which can, in turn, influence their professional recognition and their social value. We interviewed twenty occupational therapists workins at eight public health institutions in Recife, Pernambuco State, Brazil. The procedure employed for data collection was the interview, devised in such a way as to encourage verbalization on Occupational Therapy and professional identity. The analysis of the data collected shows that some subjects are considered especially significant, such as: Occupational Therapy as a profession in the field of rehabilitation, the role of occupational therapy in integrating handicapped people back into society, the importance of a scientific basis and of emotional balance in practical situation, requirements for professional formation. We also identified two aspects underling the professionalsâ reflections: health and physical problems as complex phenomena which, in order to be properly measured, require a perspective of totality and an interdisciplinary action as an element for building a professional identity and a way to bring professional and social recognition to Occupational Therapy
