RESUMO

This study intended to identify and to describe the tension lived by the caregiver due to the activities of taking care, in an unit of pediatric internment, with rooming in, of a Hospital of Infantile Cancer, Campinas, SP, Brazil. The research area was The Nursing Care Process . For two months 50 caregivers of children from 3 to 10 years were interviewed. Each caregiver was asked to estimate how much the child depends on her/him to perform activities of daily life (ADL). The caregivers scored (0-10 scale) the degree in that the caregiver received help of other and the intensity of the damage that taking care provoked in areas of the caregiver s personal life (sleep, humor, leisure, sexual life etc.). The diagnoses of caregiver role strain and risk of caregiver role strain were explored by questions based on indicators or risk factors of these diagnoses (NANDA, 1999-2000). The diagnosis of caregiver role strain was determined by the presence of two or more defining characteristics and for the global analysis of the answers and the risk for caregiver role strain , for the presence of at least a risk factor. Forty seven caregivers were women (mothers or grandparents) and three, men (parents). They presented caregiver role strain 78% and 100% had risk for caregiver role strain . The defining characteristics more frequent were: apprehension about care receiver s care when caregiver is iII or deceased and altered care giving activities . The more frequent risk factors were: illness severity of the care receiver , caregiver is female , Iack of respite and recreation for caregiver , inexperience with care giving , psychological problems in care receiver, duration of care giving required , complexity/amount of care giving tasks , unpredictable illness course or instability in the care receiver s health . The children were more dependent in ADL to take medicine and more independent in ADL to move . The children from 3 to 6 years had larger dependence degree. The help received by the caregiver it was partial before the internment and, during the internment, it was limited to the domestic activities and under the care of the other children. The job, the studies, the sleep, the leisure, the humor and the sexual life were the aspects of caregiver s life more affected for the care giving activities. In conclusion, caregivers of children with cancer have high risk for caregiver role strain
