RESUMO

This research describes and analyses the main characteristics and tendencies of the Brazilian academic research on scientific education, particularly of the studies concerned with the teaching at the elementary school leveI. It identifies 212 thesis and dissertations produced in Brazil until 1995. About such studies, it develops a bibliographical revision research, whose parameters comprise the following aspects: author and research advisor; institutions and academic unit responsible for the research; year of the defense; academic degree; scholastic levei encompassed in the study; content area of the school curriculum approached in the research; the kind of academic work (or research type) and thematic focus of the study. Several results are presented, related to the development of that production since the 70 s, the most evident being the significant growth in the number of works dated from the end of the 80 s; the increased concentration of researches carried on in a few institutions; the lack of studies more specifically concerned with the initial years of school; the lack of intervention research on the scholastic practices, articulating the diverse areas which incorporate scientific education, or dealing with the various curriculum disciplines from an interdisciplinary perspective. It is observed that the researches in the area tend to be mostly concerned with the internal issues of the teaching-Iearning scholastic processo They scarcely deal with either, the relationship between science and society, and the social commitment on the part of the school and its scientific education
