RESUMO

It is assumed in this paper that time as a category - called here temporality - can be expressed by a wide range of linguistic expressions, but as a methodological reduction, our approach selects verbal tenses of the indicative mode as the most obvious and clear representatives of temporality in Portuguese. Therefore, we focus on them, defining tense as a grammaticalized expression of location in time. Although consequences of time can be seen through human experience, temporality is no object that offers itself to direct observation. That s the reazon why, according to the Special Theory of Relativity (STR), it should be defined, not identified. Following REICHENBACH s model for the interpretation of tenses in natural language, three theoretical constructs are used in tense definition: point of speech, point of event, point of reference. Keeping to traditional nomenclature en Portuguese, we call them moments. As REICHENBACH took from the STR the foundations for his model, a discussion about what is understood by point of reference, or observer, in, EINSTEIN s theory, provides a conception of time that is not linear, as our tradition has methaphorically shown use Upon a non-linear conception of time a paradigm for the definitions of tenses can be built. And these definitions turn out to be consistent with textual interpretations for temporality. Considering that communication is always realized by units larger than words or sentences, also textual categories - such as cohesion and coherence - take temporality as part of a textual network and reveal that the different designs tenses compose in a text are systematic; they can even be used as criteria in a typology
