RESUMO

This research evaluates a composition that should be considered one of the most unique among Antonio Carlos Gomes repertoire: the Sonata for Strings O Burrico de Pau (The Little Wooden Donkey, 1894). Although this piece is not grandiose, nor does it use challenging techniques, it should be considered unique because it is the very last piece he composed, it is his only piece for string ensembles, and it is very versatile since it can be performed by various types of ensembles with strings. Through the study of this composition the aesthetic and stylistic elements of Carlos Gomess music will be addressed. Although history has overlooked him, he was the first non European composer to be well received on Europe stages and to have his pieces included in the current operatic repertoire of his time. Methodologically this research includes a revision of Brazilian music history, which is used to determine the influences on his style; a discussion about what can be defined as nationalism in music; a historical evaluation of Carlos Gomes, including his works and his style; a theoretical and historical analysis of the Sonata for Strings; and conclusions about Gomes aesthetic and stylistic elements. A critical edition of the Sonata for Strings based on Carlos Gomes manuscripts, and a complete catalog of his compositions are included in this dissertation as well. As a case study, the purpose of this research is to compile information on Carlos Gomes compositions and stylistic elements that can be used to develop more comprehensive interpretations of both the objective and subjective components of the Sonata for Strings, as well as all of his other works.
