RESUMO

This paper aims at analyzing the reIationship between television, biography, memory and privare life regarding the production of taIk-shows - a program geme which has been broadcasted on Brazilian TV for many years - in an attempt to understand the aspects of the contemporary socialand cuttural life, and their reIation to the mass media communication processes. In a country which goes through fast social and technological changes, television programs, having an enIarged public, constitute a vigorous cultural agency. Albeit not the only one, they propose to everyday life a compatible ethos to the requirements of a technological, economical, social and political modernity. TV programs, by congregating interviewers and interviewees, are specific cultural agents, reIating to several spheres of social experience. They express a demand for the construction of pliable, plastic individuaIs and identities, agile enough to adapt to the requirements imposed by such fast-changing movements, and at the same time contributing to configure them. This TV program geme allows us to look at some aspects of contemporary culture: the art of conversation, a practice which underlies the narrative geme of the 1V interview- in which the protagonists are both the interviewer and the interviewees; the particular method of constructing, recording and propagating biographies, configured for this kind of media; the existence of mass media locations in which the social memory is created, kept and transmitted by means of interviews and testimonials by those who live History; the public judgment locations which are edified there, and the values which are transmitted through them; the emergence of new cultural intermediaries; and the way in which the media operates as a mechanism of reIationship between the private life and the knowledge of the specialists in charge of informing and interacting with the construction and/or the transformation of a number of subjects and identities. This analysis is an attempt to evaluate, bearing in mind one of its specific manifestations, how the talk show geme can contribute to conform the many dimensions of culture; how it responds to and intercedes with some dimensions of social life, and how it collaborates to configure some aspects of the contemporary social experience insofar as it exposes the private life to ample public visibility
