RESUMO

The black tourmaline powder of shorlite-dravite series, NaFe3Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3OH, has been used in agricultures and in the production of cosmetics, paints, tissues, water and air purifiers. The pyroelectricity and the emission of far infrared radiation of tourmaline are the main properties explored by most products. The black tourmaline shows significant decomposition at temperatures above 750o C. The production of particles smaller than 2 μm is possible by the use of high energy planetary ball mill. The grinding should be performed in water, with pH above 8 and duration longer than 480 minutes, in a configuration that has impact, compression and shearing. It is possible to obtain ceramics from powders of black tourmaline and diatomite by direct pressing or by slip casting and sintering at 750o C. The growth inhibition of the fungus Saccharamices Cerevisiae caused by the presence of tourmaline film was clear and the addition of tourmaline powder to commercial acrylic paints promotes the growth reduction of bryophytes on painted walls.
