RESUMO

This work approaches the use of reinforced concrete on two icons of the modern architecture in São Paulo, the building of the Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP project 1957/66 built in 1960/69) and the building of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAUUSP - project 1961; 65/66 built in 1967/68), works which cultural value relates to history, art and technique and is of highly importance. The objective was to investigate the particular use of the concrete on these works from two complementary points of view: technical-constructive and aesthetic expression. Based on an extensive research in documentary and iconographic material, sifting out the key moments: from the original sketches, early designs, modified designs, construction, use of the building and behavior over time to the current situation. This path brought several information that led to better understand the intentions of the architects on these works, the relations between design and construction and some references for the use of reinforced concrete and exposed concrete. The work also proposes to reflect about the use and acceptance of these buildings over time, the durability of the materials and construction techniques applied, and to analyse connexions between the architects and the works. By focusing icons of the 1960s architecture of São Paulo and two of its most significant architects, this research proposes to open discussions within the history of the technique on modern architecture in Brazil, relating technological development to technical and aesthetical values of the paulista architecture.
