RESUMO

The aim of this research is bringing to light women teachers and writers who worked in ParaÃba State at the beginning of the XX century, rescuing them from the depths of oblivion they presently are. For that purpose, texts by Adamantina Neves, EudÃsia Vieira, Ezilda Barreto, Lylia Guedes and Maria Ignez Mariz will be presented to our contemporary reading public. The writing activity is meant to be an ethical stand before themselves and the world, a continuous search for freedom associated to the issue of solidarity and social justice. The analysis of the texts produced by women writers herein pursued integrates the double perspectives of gender and ethnic group. We have identified in the writings of these authors from the past a deep concern with racism as well as any other form of oppression. Our research has covered the books these women wrote, and also the material they published in the local press: in the A UniÃo newspaper, and also in the magazines Flor de Liz and Era Nova, in which they advocated the need for an intellectual guidance for women. We have also outlined the biographies of Alcide Cartaxo, Anayde Beiriz, Juanita Machado, JÃlia Leal, Olivina OlÃvia Carneiro da Cunha and Petronila Pordeus, highlighting the participation of women in the History of Education and Culture in ParaÃba. Last, but not least, as we traced back the threads of freedom woven by these women from the past, we had in mind offering Brazilian scholars a reading that reveals that humanity that lies beyond mere intellectuality and surprises readers even today. The analysis of the texts written by women included in this thesis indicates that since early XX century these teachers and writers have been showing us that there is room for novelty and surprise in Literature and Education, mainly the novelty of an expression of freedom: freedom that not a definitive condition but rather a permanent coming to be
