RESUMO
The Brazilian Cerrado occupies an area with about 207 million hectares distributed in 12 states In this region the soils are acid with little organic substance and high aluminum levels Under the form of free ions the aluminum becomes toxic for the plants and affects their growth and development Maize considered an important culture in these areas suffers several injuries caused by the toxicity of the present Al in these areas In this study plants of maize of the L3 line were genetically changed with the ADP/ATP translocase gene previously isolated in apex of maize roots under Al stress with the objective of production of genotypes more tolerant to abiotic stresses Physiological analyses of these plants under Al stress and salinity stress suggest that this gene does not have tolerance to Al but can relate to salinity tolerance It is estimated that the superexpression of the ADP/ATP translocase gene controls the levels of cellular ATP keeping the energy balance during the stress
