RESUMO

This work has as its main purpose to analyse ten brazilian documentaries produced between 1990 and 2003 and to verify the way the representation of criminals occurs on them. For such task the author applied, among others, the Bill Nichols (1988, 2001) concepts of voice of documentary and documentary modes of representation . The observations of Bernardet (1985, 2003) concerning the voice of the people on films were also applied. This work also collates and distinguishes the modes of production developed by television journalism and by documentaries, and emphasizes why documentaries manage to produce more complete and less stigmatizing representations than TV reports
