RESUMO

The balance between economic development and natural preservation transforms ecotourism into important sector of the economy in modern societies. The present study tries to contribute with a methodology that serves to the planning of the ecotourism in a region with landscapes and other physiographical attributes that makes it a potential ecotourism area. The study area includes part of the counties of Capitólio, São João Batista do Glória and São José da Barra, in the State of Minas Gerais, inside the administrative region called Médio Rio Grande, an area of immense ecotouristical potential. The methodology is an adaptation of INPE s Ecological-Economical Zoning and the concept of landscape units, focusing on the definition of landscape units with value for ecotourism and its representation through Remote Sensing and Geoprocessing techniques. The final product is a Geographical Database containing detailed information about environmental and social-cultural aspects of the study area, maps with interpretative trails and proposals of circuits to the practice of ecotourism activities, taking into account the natural and/or the cultural attractive and access ways using the pictograms suggested by EMBRATUR, the official tourism organization in Brazil.
