RESUMO

Introduction: the healthcare workers, particularly, nursing professionals are constantly exposed to biological risk and then, they can get diseases in their workplace. There are several pathogens that can be transmitted after an occupational exposure and those of most epidemiological relevant are the HIV, HBV and HCV. The notification of accidents involving biological material besides providing legal support to the professional also enables healthcare institutions to develop, implement and after evaluate strategies to prevent further accidents. Objectives: to identify the rate of underreporting of accidents with biological material by nursing staff and the referred factors that contributed to underreporting. Material and Methods: this is a cross-sectional study. The population was composed by the nursing professionals of the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto Medical School who provided direct care to patient or handling objects used by them and agreed to participate by signing the Consent Form. The professionals were interviewed individually, in their own workplace and in a privative room. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics through the Statistical Package for the Social Science, version 17.0. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: of the 1666 respondents, 352 reported having been injured with biological material in the last twelve months preceding the date of the interview, and among them, 129 were not notified through the Occupational Accident Report (OAR), thus the rate of underreporting of accidents was 36.6%. The most frequently reported reason for underreporting was considering the accident as a low risk. Conclusions: this study allowed to evaluate the rate of underreporting accidents involving biological material occurred with nursing professionals of a teaching hospital in the interior of the São Paulo state and the main reasons given by the professionals who refered not to have filled out the OAR. It is believed that this study can contribute to propose measures to improve professionals\ adherence to the notification procedure and consequently to check greater safety to the health of these professionals.
