RESUMO

The economic and social transformations taking place in recent decades, understood by concepts as contemporary restructuring, modified especially the form of production and appropriation of metropolis and urban agglomerations. In the analysis of these transformations, the State of Sao Paulo, holder of the largest and most complex urban network of the country, watched from the 80´s industrial dispersal beyond the limits of the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo and the formation of a new territorial entity Macrometropole. This region is formed by the square of Campinas, Santos, Sorocaba and Sao Jose dos Campos. And it is from the dynamic socio-economic and urban space macrometropolitano originated in the research addresses the situation pre-metropolitan Sorocaba. The dissertation presents the region of Sorocaba, from his Administrative Region, through its Region Government, thus reaching the Urban Agglomeration and finally the contemporary urban situation. The research also introduces the contemporary discussion about the process of becoming metropolis in Brazil, to discuss the formation and institutionalization of the metropolitan region of Sorocaba, its composition and position of the government and other urban actors with respect to its future as a new Brazilian metropolis.
