RESUMO

In this study the generation and propagation of the atmospheric gravity waves were investigated. The gravity waves in the mesopause region were observed by airglow all sky imaging technique at Cachoeira Paulista (23°S, 45°W), near tropic of Capricorn, and at São João do Cariri (7°S, 36°W), in the equatorial region. A reverse ray tracing method was tested and used to find out the wave source region and to study propagation process through the middle atmosphere. Satellite images were used to identify whether disturbances that could be related to the gravity wave sources. From the ray tracing model calculation, it was found that at Cachoeira Paulista about 16% of the wave events showed their origin in the troposphere. Most of them were located within an area of less than 400 km from the observation site. The identified sources in troposphere were related with the front activity, deep tropospheric convection and topographic effect by the Serra da Mantiquira and Serra do Mar mountains. At Cachoeira Paulista about 78% of the wave events showed that the ray paths stopped at mesospheric heights. At São João do Cariri the results from the ray tracing model shows that about 23% of the wave event had their origin at the troposphere, in 250 km radius away from the observation site. The deep tropospheric convection in the equatorial region should be the most important gravity wave source. The squall lines (tropical instability lines) were the most evident meteorological activity present in north-northeast of Brazil. About 76% of the wave events showed that the ray paths stopped at the mesospheric heights, indicating presence of waves with non-tropospheric origin.
