RESUMO

This study analyzes the student participation in publications of postgraduate courses of Administration, in Brazil, between 2000 and 2008. Specifically, it seeks to identify student participation among different types of publications (proceedings, journals and books), among courses with different grades obtained in evaluations promoted by CAPES and the proportion of publications in co-authorship with their supervisors. Theoretical framework addresses some topics related to university and research at postgraduate courses, postgraduate courses, the structure of the postgraduate courses evaluation system, and some recent trends in the amounts of students, teachers and postgraduate courses of Administration. The study is predominantly quantitative and descriptive. A survey was conducted to collect data of 2995 publications from 38 postgraduate courses of Administration, corresponding to the period between 2000 and 2008. Secondary data were collected from the Cadernos de Produção Bibliográfica used by CAPES to perform periodic evaluations. Results indicate that student participation occurs in 53% of the publications of the courses in the triennium 2001-2003, 57% in 2004-2006 and 59% in the biennium 2007-2008. The growth of student participation occurs at a higher ratio in private universities than in courses of public universities. Student productivity has increased from 0.28 product in 2000 to 0.70 in 2008. Student publications are relatively concentrated in the form of conference proceedings, but this concentration decreases as they move to higher degrees (i.e. doctorate degree). There are higher levels of student participation in publications among courses with higher grades (ranked by CAPES as 5 or 6) than among courses with lower grades (ranked as 3 or 4), both in quantities as in the scores attributable to these publications (Qualis scores). The most common form of student publication is in cooperation with professors. About 81% of these publications occur in coauthorship between student and their supervisor. There is a higher occurrence of coauthorship with supervisors among students with lower academic degrees (undergraduates), becoming less frequent as they reach higher degrees (doctorate). It is possible to conclude that student participation in publications and their productivity increased in the period. The students mix of publications tends to comprise a lesser proportion of publications in proceedings, becoming more frequent publications in journals and books. The student participation is higher among programs with higher grades, which means they also contribute more to the grades attributed by CAPES. Finally, there is prevalence of collaboration between students and their supervisors when the authorship of the publications involves students and professors.
