RESUMO

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) breeding for tropical climate is important because most cultivars used in Brazil come from temperate countries, presenting low adaptability under warm climates. In the potato breeding program at Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA) there is a project established to search for better ways to improve selection efficiency for these conditions. The studies presented here aims to: a) use sequential selection index for potato and check its usefulness, b) evaluate the stability and adaptability of 51 clones, c) evaluate the use of selection indices and indirect selection for stress and favorable crop conditions. Data used for these studies came from nine trials conducted under different localities, years and cropping seasons. The selection index used for weight the phenotypic mean of the sequential trials was efficient and can be easily applied in breeding programs. Low correlation coefficients were observed among clone means across generations, even for traits with moderate to high heritabilities, showing that single generation data should be used only to discard lower performance clones. For traits with lower heritabilities, the sequential index showed higher efficiency. Regarding selection for tolerance to high temperatures, indirect selection was not efficient, especially due to the low correlations among clone means in all environments. Selection based on mean performance across all environments is much more recommended if the purpose is to select clones with wider adaptation. In general, clones with higher performance in stress environments and considered heat tolerant are specifically adapted to this environment, presenting low means under favorable conditions. However, genotypes with high performance in stress and non-stress environments could be selected.
