RESUMO

Atopic asthma is the most frequent chronic disease in children. Unfortunately, until now a days, there is no specific treatment for this disease. Others alternatives have been stimulated for improve the results of the medicine treatment. All of then shows controversial results, including swimming The aim of this study was to evaluate in school-children and adolescents with moderate persistent atopic asthma the benefits of a swimming program in relation of the spirometric tests, bronchial hyperresponsiviness and changes in their quality of life and socialization A team of 26 school-children and adolescents (ages 7 through 18 years) with moderate atopic persistent asthma of both genders was studied. The whole program consisted of a total of 24 lessons, twice a week, for three months and during this period the peak expiratory flow (PEF) was monitored A control group including 18 subjects was performed, in a non randomized clinical trial. All of them were submitted to pulmonary function tests, provocative concentration of metacholine (PC20) and answered a quality of life questionnaire (only the swimming group) (before and after swimming). The results showed that the swimming program did not improve FVC and FEV1 but the bronchial reactivity through the provocative concentration of metacholine and all the measurements properties of the quality of life questionnaire
