RESUMO
This dissertation describes a methodology based on the Fast Fourier Transfonn - FFT to synthesize transient Green and Influence functions for unbounded viscoelastic domains. The FFT algorithm is applied to Green or Influence functions that has been previously obtained in the frequency domain. The techniques used to treat the functions in the frequency domain are presented. The effect of three distinct damping models on the transient response has been studied. The constant hysteretic damping model, as well as the Kelvin-Voigt and a ramp-like model are inc1uded in the analysis. This work also presents two strategies to obtains the transient response of rigid surface foundations interacting with viscoelastic soils, modeled as half-spaces. The first strategy is the direct transformation of the rigid foundation frequency response into transient responses via the FFT algorithm. The second strategy is based on the superposition of transient stress-boundary value problems, which together with equilibrium and kinematic compatibility equations, leads to the rigid foundation response. This second strategy allows, in principle, the non-linear, transient contact problem between soil and foundation interface to be addressed
