RESUMO

The present research had as its main goal to investigate the solution of geometry problems. Its subjects were individuals belonging to two distinct samples: in the first one there were 124 future primary school teachers; and the other was composed by 90 undergraduate students, future Elementary and Secondary School Mathematics teachers. The tools used to collect data were: an informative questionnaire with questions related to the school life of students and a set of ten math questions elaborated according to Krutetskii (1976). In this set of questions there were problems categorized as complete and incomplete, and problems with superfluous information. We could detected meaningful differences – related to the utilization of concepts and principles – when comparing the solutions presented by students of these two different groups, since the future Elementary and Secondary School teachers sample used concepts and principles more appropriately than those belonging to the Primary School teachers sample. Data analyzed also showed meaningful differences, related to the global achievement in problem solving, between these two samples, although the samples scores were both too low: 2,0 for the undergraduate students and 0,68 to those belonging to the elementary and Secondary Mathematics teachers, in a zero-to-ten scale. Incomplete problems and superfluous information ones were a common difficulty to students of both samples. The future teachers poor achievement shows the necessity in implementing continuing education programs in which must be discussed not only math content properly, but also methodological aspects related to teaching and learning of concepts and principles used in geometrical problems.
