RESUMO

Tourism activity presents a development opportunity for locations with tourism potential, both large and small. Much attention has been directed towards the natural, artificial, historical and cultural resources, with the aim of transforming these places into clearly-formatted tourism products. Tourism development can bring benefits to the host community, such as an improvement in quality of life, the preservation of natural and cultural wealth, greater qualification of the workforce, increased income, an improvement in basic and tourism infrastructure, and an increase in job opportunities. These benefits have been observed in Treze Tílias, in the State of Santa Catarina, the object of study of this work, which seeks to analyze the changes that have taken place in the town, due to the expansion of cultural tourism. In order to achieve the objective of this study, which is characterized as a case study with qualitative characteristics, the following methodological procedures were used: a bibliographic review, document research, and interviews. As a result, it was found that of the changes in Treze Tílias caused by the development of tourism activity, the main ones were positive, particularly those related to the increase in the number of tourism enterprises and the conservation of the uses and customs of the local population
