RESUMO

This thesis analyses the trajectory of Rio de Janeiro Geographical Society (Sociedade de Geografia do Rio de Janeiro , SGRJ) from 1910 to 1945, year of its replacement by another institution, with nationwide influence, the Brazilian Geographical Society (Sociedade Brasileira de Geografia). Created in the 19th century, that association was recognized as a cultural refuge and counted with the support of the emperor D. Pedro II. When the regime changed to republic, the SGRJ suffered from political adversities, but still developed pedagogical activities and projects in order to show Brazil to Brazilians, which was the agenda of nationalist movement on the first decades of the 20th century. In 1930, the entity supported the coup détat led by Getúlio Vargas SGRJ collaborated with the government and wa Institute of Geography and Statistics) geographical official system. It also was pioneer promoting the Brazilian Geographical Congresses between 1909 and 1944. From its foundation to extinction, SGRJ gave space to the debate and the gathering of specialists, and besides the lack of systematization and continuity, it is undeniable that the scientific practices developed by the Society helped to solidify the geography discipline.
