RESUMO
This research aimed to unveil the social representation of the Physical Education teacher in relation to the importance of the discipline as an interdisciplinary component of education Twelve Physical Education teachers (six from elementary and high schools administered by the government and six from elementary and high schools under private administration) participated in the study Data were collected by means of questionnaires comprising open and restricted questions and free associations The data concerned to the answers were analyzed qualitatively but the method of Vergèss Structural Approach (1992) was used for the free associations By using the Social Representations Theory as a main tool it was found references in the Physical Education historicity that allowed establishing parameters for the analysis The interpretation of the results unveiled contradictions in the representations of the participants that is the discourses pointed to a positive representation of the physical education but traces of the technicality medical-hygienist military and other tendencies were still present It is possible to note some difficulties related to the clarification of the physical education specificity and the distinction of the thinking from the making The participants difficulties are attributed to exogenous factors they feel banished into a second plan in the school context and they present conceptual polysemy regarding the interdisciplinary aspect On the other hand everybody recognizes the physical education plays an important role on the students formation and integral development These results point to retention of elements of the traditional view which are mixed with elements of an education more compromised to the reality of the nowadays This seems to mean a changing process at the beginning yet in the teachers Social Representation
