RESUMO

In this thesis we present the results of a linguistic study on the Baníwa of Içana nominal classifiers, seeking to contribute, although modestly, to the linguistic knowledge of this important grammatical aspect of this Arawakan language. While developing this research we have taken into consideration the typological and functional studies on classifiers in languages of two parts of the world, Africa and Amazonia (Allan 1977; Dixon 1986; Derbyshire and Payne 1990, Grinevald 1999, 2000; Grinevald and Seifart 2005), as well as on specific languages of Amazonia (Barnes 1990; Gomez-Imbert 1996, 2006, Stenzel 2004, Chacon 2007, 2008, among others). One of the main results of the present investigation was to give, by means of first and second hand linguistic data, the foundations supporting the view that the semanticfunctional classifier system of the Baníwa/Kuripáko languages is a single system (and not a mixed or multiple one), which is linguistically manifested by means of derivational morphemes, the majority of which have a known lexical origin. These morphemes combine with nominal modifiers forming a phrase together with the nominal nucleus; this system characterizes as an agreement system. In this thesis we defend the idea that African languages should not be taken as the typological reference for the study on nominal classification in other worlds languages, but only one among other important references.
