RESUMO

After reading âFormaÃÃo HistÃrica da Nacionalidade Brasileiraâ, a possibility of placing historian Oliveira Lima as builder of a possible National Brazilian Identity was noticed. We studied Oliveira Limaâs History writings as a part of the First Republicâs context and weâve decided to try to understand the participation of the historian in the debates involving the future paths of Latin American identities and to investigate the Republic-related phobia in Limaâs book. The historian played an important role in the construction of a national identity by investigating symbols, rituals, facts and monuments which are responsible for the âsense of nationâ. âFormaÃÃo HistÃrica da Nacionalidade Brasileiraâ, is the first book containig na extensive panel of the Brazilian History. In this book, the role played by Indians and Africans is neglected and the portuguese people are considered the only builders of national identity. Based on Michel Foucault we also tried to understand the relationship between Oliveira Limaâs writings and possible speech conditions of modern epitÃmÃ
