RESUMO

A new computational tool for the advanced static and dynamic analysis of steel framed structures based on the Finite Element Method has been developed and is presented herein. Understanding the static and dynamic behavior of a structure is essential for designing structures that are lighter and slenderer without affecting their safety and quality standards. As such, it is evermore necessary to use complex theories, such as nonlinear formulations, and not oversimplify the projects process analysis. In this sense, two sources of non- linearity are herein contemplated: the geometric, which considers the effects of structural displacement; and the physics, which considers the effects of the mechanical characteristics of the material used in civil construction. Member material yielding and connection flexibility of the structural members characterize the physical sources of nonlinear behavior. In an Advanced Analysis, these nonlinear effects are directly considered in the formulation of the element. This eliminates the need for distinct-phase analysis and structural designing, permitting, as such, the precise estimation of possible collapse load and modes. The necessary fundamental theories for the better understanding of structural behavior and the formulations developed for each of the cited effects are herein presented. Also presented is an evaluation of the static and dynamic stability of various structural systems, with rigid and semi-rigid connections, whose analytical or numerical solutions are found in literature. This latter evaluation is used for validating the methodology and the formulations developed by the author. Finally, some conclusions and observations referring to structural behavior are construed.
