RESUMO

As it is largely recognized by medical and psychological literature, depressive symptoms can modify the course of normal aging. By this reason, they are considered as a relevant issue in clinical, epidemiological and developmental research. Objectives: This study had a methodological and a developmental focus. The first was associated with the exploration of the psychometric features of the CES-D vis GDS, the internal consistency of a short version of the ISEL and the correlation between the subjective and objective measures of social position. The second was linked to the aim of identifying the relative impact of stressfullife events, perceived social support, perceived social class and perceived social mobility on depressive symptoms occurring in 903 community dwelling old males and females aged 60 (M=72,3 and DP=8,21), the sample of a project on successful aging that is being carried out in Juiz de Fora, Brazil (PENSA). Results: 1) In comparison with GDS (15%), CES-D C2: 11) overestimated the prevalence of depression (33,8%); high internal consistency (alpha=O,86) and a structure of three factors (negative affect; difficulties to initiate behaviors; positive affect) for CES-D; vis GDS, CES-D reached sensitivity = 74,6% and specificity = 73,6%; statistically significant positive correlations between objective and subjective measures of social class and social mobility; intermediate internal consistency to short ISEL. 2) Multivariate logistic regression identified that high number of stressful events in the last year (O.R = 2,55) and perception of low quality of social support (O.R = 2.31) offer the highest risks for depressive simptomatology. The profile of higher risk to depression includes: being woman, being younger than 70, perceiving themself as pertaining to the lower-middle class, perceiving descending social mobility in old age, perceiving social support as insufficient to fulfill his/her needs, and reporting a high number of stressful events lived in the last year
