RESUMO

Distillation is the most used separation process in many applications and, as we know, its low thermodynamic efficiency is the main disadvantage. Studies to provide energy economy are fundamental. In this sense, several techniques have been proposed in the literature to decrease the energy consumption. One these ways is changing the operation configurations of operation. In the first type, the vapour phase is divided into two equal parts at the bottom of the column and the whole amount of the falling liquid is stage-by-stage, alternatively contacted with both part of the vapour. In the Metastillation process, the falling liquid is separated into two equal parts at the top of the column and contacted with the whole amount of the uprising vapour. In this work, the operations of both alternative configuration were studied. Computational programs were developed to simulated these columns operations. A rigorous methods were developed to analyse the behavior of non ideal distillation systems. Murphree tray efficiency considering entrainment and weeping effects was calculated and discussed. The results show that the alternative processes require more stage numbers than conventional distillation column to obtain the equal separation grades at the same operational conditions. Another important observed parameter is the decrease in the tray separation area... Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
