RESUMO

The accidental debonding of a bracket is a severe complication during the orthodontic treatment, especially when this treatment is made with lingual brackets. The adhesive bond strength between brackets and teeth substrate is an important feature for the success of the introduction of the Lingual Orthodontic therapy in the dental practice, where the search for more esthetic appliances has greatly increased. The present research studied the influence of aluminum oxide (microetching) on the lingual teeth surface, before the enamel acid conditioning, in the indirect bonding of lingual orthodontic appliances. The shear bonding strength was measured 24 hours after the bonding of the brackets on the lingual surfaces of 40 human premolars. The teeth were divided in to 4 groups, with the following enamel preparations and lingual brackets: Group 1 10 premolars with the American Orthodontics brand and 37% acid phosphoric conditioning; Group 2 10 premolars with the American Orthodontics brand and application of aluminum oxide (microetching) followed by a 37 % acid phosphoric conditioning; Group 3 10 premolars with the Ormco brand and 37% acid phosphoric conditioning; Group 4 10 premolars with the Ormco brand and application of aluminum oxide (microetching) followed by a 37 % acid phosphoric conditioning. It could be observed that there was no statistic difference between the groups regarding the enamel preparation, however statistic differences were found between the different brands of lingual brackets. The American Orthodontics brand showed greater levels of debonding resistance in comparison to the Ormco brand. Based on these findings, it was concluded: regarding the two brands of brackets, the adhesive resistance was not increased with the application of aluminum oxide (microetching) on the enamel lingual surfaces, but it was found that, on average, the American Orthodontics brand showed levels values of adhesive resistance in comparison to Ormco brand
