RESUMO

This research focuses on the Brazil Association for Catholic Education (Associação de Educação Católica do Brasil AEC), its discourses and its political practices devoted to defend the catholic educational institutions between 1945 and 1994. After its foundation, in 1945, the AEC became the main entity as far as catholic schools and educational principles were concerned. In its beginnings, the AEC was clearly pro-privatization, denying the State an educational monopoly and defending the right of catholic schools to exist. On pursuing this goal, AEC had to establish alliances with non- religious segments, such as the educational entrepreneurs. From the 1970s, AEC withdrew from these alliances and started to claim for the catholic schools the status of public but non-governmental.
