RESUMO

Most maize breeding programs has given emphasis on cultivar development more adapted to high plant densities. However there is little information about the interaction of S0:1 progenies x plant densities. The present work aimed to evaluate plant density effect on the selection process of inbred progenies. Ninety-eight S0:1 progenies from the single cross hybrid GNZ 2004 were evaluated in two plant densities, 50 thousand and 75 thousand plants.ha-1. For each plant density the 98 S0:1 progenies, with the GNZ 2004 hybrid and its F2 generation, were evaluated in a simple 10x10 lattice design. The experiments were performed in the experimental area of the Agriculture Department of the Federal University of Lavras, in Lavras, MG, Brazil. The evaluated characteristics were yield of husked ear, prolificacy and plant and ear height. Results showed the presence of genetic variance between the S0:1 progenies in the two densities allowing the selection of progenies with a higher production potential of husked ear corn and with superior agronomic characteristics. The non significance of the progenies x plant densities interaction, associated with the high genetic correlations, show that the selection could be performed at any plant density, without compromising the selection process.
