RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate stress and support (social, personal and work) in workers of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), São Paulo, Brazil. The sample studied was composed by 400 male and female workers from UNICAMP. They were randomly selected and they were classified afterwards in four groups according to the organisation leveI a)Basic, b)Medium, c)Superior leveI and supervisors and, d) Directors. This study was carried out from October to December 1997 using SWS SurveyC. In 1988, the World Health Organisation, after its intemational survey of work stress, concluded that despite all were Known the factors that likely cause stress, little is known about the subject in the developing countries - especially the psycho-social aspects of stress, because no instl"l1:ment exists adapted in different cultures to monitor worker s stress. he present research is the first study developed in Brazil using the instrument SWS (Stress. Work and Social) translated, validated and adapted by Guimarães e Macfadden. This instrument was developed in 1991, by Ostermann and Gutiérrez, coordenated worldwide research by professionals in studying and combating the disabling effects of occupational stress. The collected data were analysed by means of statistical measures of association, composed a study which proposes to be analytic and descriptive. Significant associations were found between Mental Heath and stressors in three different areas (social, personal and work)
