RESUMO

This research investigates the meaning of health and infant illness for the Kaiowá and Guarani of the Indian Land of Caarapó, Mato Grosso do Sul, approaching the choices made in the therapeutic itinerary. It proposes to be identified the explanations and the circumstances in which the death of infants less than a year old of life occurred, according to the perception of this people. For the development of this research, we adopted the ethnographic contribution, in the sense of capturing the links among health similar events, illness and infant death to the elements of their context of life. The analysis in the meaning of health revealed that the symbolic events which defines them and are built daily, depend on the experiences on the person and their cosmological, social and environmental elements. The plans of casualty has shown the sensibility and the perception of this people facing infant health problems, informed by social, cultural and others aspects incorporated and reelaborated in the closeness with the health service available in the I.L. For the diarrhea and the infant malnutrition, it was identified the utilization of different interpretative plans of casualty: of environmental, social, and cultural order, assigned by simultaneous form or not. The analysis of the therapeutic itinerary allowed showing the importance of the negotiation process among the Kaiowá and Guarani with their society and the non-Indian society. In the process of negotiation with the interior family, it was observed that even it is not exempt of conflicts, mainly intergeneration. In the therapeutic itinerary, the Kaiowá and Guarani can appeal to his health system and to the biomedical, always considering the answer of each case and their comprehension of efficacy. In the use of homemade serum, it can be noticed that the people establish a therapeutic representation similar to determined types of homemade medicine, used in the preventive practice as well as a diarrhea treatment, while others utilize it according to the biomedicine orientations. The study has shown that the biomedical system is complementary to their health system, once comprehended the cure harnessed to their symbolic context. The facts of infant mortality analyzed have proved the quality reduction of statement registered of deaths. In the explanation of the infants death, the Kaiowá and Guarani utilize a religious orientation and the life situation. In the analyses of infants deaths, can be noticed a persistent inequality, upon ignoring the explanations and the context of life of that people and their family groups where happened the deaths of infants and still by the fragilities in the service to the infant and to the pregnant women. It is highlighted the necessary development of actions in the health services, which consider these meanings and work in the perspective of the interior family as expert of the formation and the growth of the child.
