RESUMO
The present dissertation investigates how the portuguese jesuit Antônio Vieira (1608-1697) represents Saint Anthony in the sermons that were dedicated to him. The objective is to understand why Vi eira attributed certain meanings to Saint Anthony in that historical period. Therefore, this work analyses how Vieira, in the nine Saint Anthony s Sermons, gives other meanings to the Saint s figure, by appropriating Saint Anthony s medieval and modern hagiographic narratives
