RESUMO

This dissertation aims at studying the religious prints generally known in Brazil as santinhos. Based on the traditional graphic configuration, to what one would consider today as a rooted structure to a popular and mass culture, one wishes to reflect, so to, eventually, revaluate the convictions upon the methodological and projective processes which compose the practical exercise in this activity which is known as graphic design. This research aims at presenting the way that different social structures work on the imaginary or symbolic dimension, as to exalt concretely, through its material productions, social representations that translate values and meanings. One comprehends that distinct social realities may take on different perceptions and understandings about things in the world, as to the probation of properties (material or symbolic), such as the value judment laid to it by a determined social group, may vary just the same. Thus, one discusses during this study that the meaning of a graphic artifact would not be defined by its objective qualities neither by its formal criteria, inner to the object itself, whereas, above all, by its external conditions that permeate its productions. By this way, this study focuses on an array of conditions which one must take into account before interpreting certain image as good or bad, showing that even a religious print may reveal previously unknown dimensions to someone that may not be familiar with its cultural and visual codes.
