RESUMO

The present dissertation has as its theme the study and analysis of the understanding and the practices of social responsibility for the construction of corporate citizenship. Its object of investigation relied upon the multinational Cummins Brasil Ltda., a diesel engine manufacturer, located in the city of Guarulhos, in the state of São Paulo, for having been recognized and awarded as a corporate citizen. The theoretical scenario is comprised of the conceptual references interrelated with social responsibility, citizenship and ethics. The research is of qualitative nature, mainly with methodological procedures, half-structured interviews accomplished with six individuals, composed by four employees and two others from social projects, whose analysis of the empirical data emphasizes the content and meaning of these individuals accounts. The results of the research allowed the confirmation of the hypothesis, that is, that social responsibility is a strategic condition for the construction of internal and external participative relations of the company, evidencing that social responsibility at Cummins is a process towards the construction of this business organization as a corporate citizen
