Rio de Janeiro : crescimento, transformações e sua importancia para a economia nacional (1930-2000)

RESUMO

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the transformations that happened in the economy of Rio de Janeiro between 1930 and 2000, trying to understand the causes of its relative emptying. To do so, after a brief historical recovery that includes the period between the 18th century and the 20, is analyzed the development of the most important economic sectors. We pinpoint the region?s development amid the accelerated Brazilian urbanization, the process of integration of the national market, the transfer of the Brazilian capital for Brasília and to the coalition among the old states of Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara. In the last part of the work, we focus on the most important changes observed in the state?s economic structure in the last years of the 20th century, highlighting the crisis of the 80?s and the recovery of economic growth observed in the 90. We discuss the situation of the processing and extractive industries, services (emphasizing the financial, public and trade sectors). Finally, we point out the growing importance of the petroleum industry for the economy and state finances, analyzing the limitations and possibilities for this activity to promote dynamic linkages for the whole regional economical group.
