RESUMO

The Afro-Brazilian rituals in the capital city of the state of ParÃ, north of Brazil, have a peculiar method of organizing its social groups. Previous studies emphasize the existence of a âterreiro de raizâ (ritual site), originated from the maranhense and bahiano models, having the genealogy, family members and founding myth, which is originated from Africa. By means of this reality and breaking the old-fashioned models, the Afro-Brazilian ritual sites in BelÃm get together through civil institutions. The relationship between these institutions is conflicting. This study is based on the oldest institution among all the existing ones: âFederaÃÃo Espirita e Umbandista dos Cultos Afro-Brasileiros do Estado do ParÃâ (a local Afro-Brazilian ritual institution) and attempts to show the internal organization and the place it takes in the Afro- Paraense religious field as well
