RESUMO

This paper analyzes a role of great neogothic temples built between XIX and XX centuries in some Mexican cities, using two examples: The expiatory temple of Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, in León, Guanajuato and the church of San José Obrero in Arandas on Jalisco. The role of this temples are outstanding by its links and relations with present urban network, its simbolic values like monumentality and its function to religious worship. These churches remained unfinished by politics and economic questions and it has been finished after a large process adding second Vatican Council liturgy rules on it inner architecture, becoming city landmarks with capacity to generate a new central spaces for citizenship.
