RESUMO

Death, at least in the vast majority of Western cultures, either on personal, social issues, and/or religious is not the people"s preferred theme, nor treated as a natural subject. But, if so, how those who, by their own work reality, need to live and face the death every single day? What it means for these professionals? Are those people different from others? Don"t they care about death, the same way the majority of people does? Weren"t they human beings? Due so many questioning, our objective is to search the scientific literature identifying how the thematic of death has being treated in the academic nursing training. The methodology used was the qualitative, with a documental exploratory study, characterized on the bibliographic search. The databases accessed were MEDLINE, LILACS, BIREME, SciELO, BDENF and Central Library of Ribeirão Preto-USP, during a five years period (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009). We use as keywords: "education death and dying and teaching and learning of nursing, death and dying". The searches were made from July to October 2009. Were found 12 articles in periodical with qualis A1, A2 and B1, B2. Were also found four chapters of two different books, dealing with the theme of death in academic training of graduate students in nursing. Then, three categories appeared for literature review of books and three categories for literature review of articles respectively: 1 The death and the attempt to classify it; 2 The thanatology and the University; 3 The academic training of nurses on the death-die thematic; and; 1 the nursing students and the daily contact with death; 2 the nursing faculty and the conviviality with death and the skills to teach; 3 the academics graduation supporting the critical reflective vision about death-die thematic. We therefore believe that, in spite of having investments, they are very small yet, in relation to the necessity for the training of nursing academics, and also that these investments be published more frequently for the whole community, and that the behavior change in this way, in the training of future nurse, and that new studies can enhance the knowledge in death and dying thematic, bringing effective changes to the current reality.
